A Journey of Healing: Somatic Experiencing and Self-Directed Neuroplasticity

w. Michal Tolk

Happy Spring! I just dropped a new episode with Michal Tolk that I am so excited to share with you. In this podcast episode, we delve into the healing power of somatic experiencing, self-directed neuroplasticity and unconditional love.

What exactly somatic experiencing and self directed neuroplasticity?

Somatic experiencing, a gentle, body-based approach to healing trauma. This method promotes the idea that our bodies have a natural ability to release stuck energy when provided with a safe and nurturing environment.

Self-directed neuroplasticity, a process that allows us to intentionally change our brain pathways. This approach, advocated by experts like Melissa Tires and John Overderve, uses a four-step framework to change how our brain is wired and, consequently, how we respond and behave. The steps include creating safety and positive regard, activating and interrupting our triggers, associating with new patterns, and reinforcing these new pathways.

We dive into both subjects in detail in today’s episode!

In closing we end up sharing vulnerably as we discuss the process of differentiation from our parents—the act of setting boundaries and forging our unique path. We reassure listeners that differentiation is a normal and necessary part of growth, and it's possible to love ourselves and others throughout the process.

The episode highlights personal stories of healing and self-discovery, illustrating the non-linear and unique nature of everyone's healing journey. Whether it's through spiritual re-evaluation, lifestyle changes, or professional transitions, we learn that moving out of a threat-response state allows us to hold all perspectives. My overall take away from this episode is that the practice of healing and growth is, at its heart, a practice of unconditional love.
